A 5 billion dollar baby Semhal Meles: Is she Ethiopia’s version of Imelda Marcos?

July 31, 2013

The Horn Times opinion July 31 2013
by Getahune Bekele, South Africa

“Doesn’t the fight for survival also justify swindle and theft? In self-defense anything goes.” Former Philippines first lady Imelda Marcos.
A 5 billion dollar baby Semhal Meles
“The amount I earn is well known. My riches, my most prized possessions are my books.” The late Ethiopian ruler Meles Zenawi Asres.
Semhal Meles Zenawi is known in Ethiopia for her lavish and jet-setting lifestyle. She starts her morning off with delicious breakfast different to her late father’s steak and scrambled eggs accompanied by heavily spiced red tea, strong enough to remove paint.
The lady always looks for best nourishment. Her Holland trained eunuch private chef from Adigrat knows how to make challah French toast and cast iron waffles but the billionaire princess prefers a bowl of vegetal touch traditional soup, with four boiled eggs and roasted red pepper swimming in it.
Then Queen Marie Antoinette’s breakfast would be washed down with her favorite single malt whiskey known as the 10 year old Ardbeg, which delivers flavors of cooked apples, orange marmalade, clove and cinnamon, set against smoke and vanilla.

Ethiopia Ranked 2nd: 10 Poorest Countries in The World

July 30, 2013

You probably heard that Ethiopia has been a fast growing economy in the content recording very high growth rate not just in Africa but the world as well. Yet the new measurement known as the Multidimensional Poverty Index, or MPI, that will replace the Human Poverty index in the United Nations’ annual Human Development Report says that Ethiopia has the second highest percentage of people who are MPI poor in the world, with only the west African nation of Niger fairing worse. This comes as more international analysts have also began to question the accuracy of the Meles government’s double digit economic growth claims and similar disputed government statistics referred by institutions like the IMF.
  1. Niger
  2. Ethiopia
  3. Mali
  4. Burkina Faso
  5. Burundi
  6. Somalia
  7. Central African Republic
  8. Liberia
  9. Guinea
  10. Sierra Leone

What is the MPI?

People living in poverty are affected by more than just income. The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) complements a traditional focus on income to reflect the deprivations that a poor person faces all at once with respect to education, health and living standard. It assesses poverty at the individual level, with poor persons being those who are multiply deprived, and the extent of their poverty being measured by the range of their deprivations.
You probably heard that Ethiopia has been a fast growing economy
The MPI can be used to create a vivid picture of people living in poverty, both across countries, regions and the world and within countries by ethnic group, urban/rural location, or other key household characteristics. It is the first international measure of its kind, and offers an essential complement to income poverty measures because it measures deprivations directly. The MPI can be used as an analytical tool to identify the most vulnerable people, show aspects in which they are deprived and help to reveal the interconnections among deprivations.

Hana’s 12-year-old brother Emanuel testifies: Ethiopian Kid Punished to Death

July 30, 2013

Child testifies about beatings, neglect from adoptive parents

MOUNT VERNON, Wash — The Sedro-Woolley parents accused abusing their adopted daughter to death listened to damaging court testimony on Monday from their adopted son.
Less than three years after arriving in Sedro-Woolley from Ethiopia, Hana Williams was dead. Her adoptive parents, Carri and Larry Williams, were charged with abusing the teen to death.
On Monday, Hana’s 12-year-old brother Emanuel took the stand to recount the horrors he said he and his sister had to live with.
Through an interpreter, Emanuel described being repeatedly beaten and punished with a water hose.
“They would beat me very hard,” he said.
Hana died in May 2012, and prosecutors say Larry and Carri Williams starved, beat and neglected the girl. The day she died, they allegedly banished her to the back yard on a rainy, 40-degree day.

Prosecutors say Hana didn’t have enough clothing and lost consciousness in the mud. Carri Williams told a 911 operator she thought Hana killed herself.
“She’s been throwing herself all around and then she collapsed,” she said.
The parents are now accused of homicide-by-abuse.
“It was the same for my sister,” Emanuel said. “The father would use a beating stick to beat us.”
Emanuel said the beatings got worse over time, telling the jurors his parents often punished the kids outside with a water hose.
“If we wet bed, peed the bed, they would use a water hose all over us, spray our bodies,” he said.

Power Africa? Empower Africans!

July 28, 2013

Power, power, power…
When President Obama recently visited Africa, he announced a “Power Africa” initiative.  In his Cape Town University speech, he proclaimed,  “I am proud to announce a new initiative. We’ve been dealing with agriculture.  We’ve been dealing with health. Now we’re going to talk about power: Power Africa, a new initiative that will double access to power in sub-Saharan Africa. Double it.  We’re going to start by investing $7 billion in U.S. government resources. We’re going to partner with the private sector, who themselves have committed more than $9 billion in investment.”
In the speech, President Obama used the word “power” 21 times in a variety of contexts. He philosophized about “power that comes from acting on our ideals” and the  “power of human beings to affect change”. He urged Africans to act “through the power of your example”. He encouraged support for programs “that empower women”. He mildly chided “those in power who make arguments to distract people from their own abuses.”
He puzzled over “what it will take to empower individual Africans” and enable Africans to have the “power to feed themselves.” He pleaded for “unleashing the power of entrepreneurship and market” and the creation of “partnership that empowers Africans.” He spoke about “the power to prevent illness and care for the sick” and “the power to connect their people to the promise of the 21st century.”
