THE IMMENSE SUFFERING OF ETHIOPIAN REFUGEES IN LIBYA

Khadafy is gone but Ethiopian refugees and workers in Libya are being imprisoned, held in containers, tortured, raped and even killed by racist Libyan police, officials and extremists. If Khadafy’s daughter in law burnt a maid’s body with hot water others like her are doing worse things especially to Ethiopian women in Libya. Tripoli, Benghazi and El Beida are mentioned as examples of places where Ethiopians and other Africans are subjected to inhumane treatment.

SOCEPP has written a number of letters to the new Libyan authorities to respect the rights of Ethiopians and all African migrant workers and refugees but it has received no reply whatsoever. SOCEPP has received the report that hundreds of Ethiopians are detained in containers in the Libyan desert and extorted to bring money from their relatives to get a release. The suffering of Ethiopian women is particularly socking while latest reports indicate that young Ethiopian men have been gang raped in both Tripoli and Benghazi and vilified for their Christian faith.

SOCEPP is continuing to call on the new Libyan authorities to stop this criminal action and inhumane treatment and has called on the allies of the new regime to call for the respect of human rights. SOCEPP calls on Ethiopians in the Diaspora to address protest letters to the Libyan authorities and to stage demonstrations outside Libyan embassies and consulates.
